The Arabic letters, shapes and positions:
It is very interesting to note that the same Arabic letter can have diverse and different shapes according to the position of the letter in a given word. So, an initial letter can look different if the same letter is in the middle or at the end of a word. E-aalim have taken this into consideration. Segmental and Suprasegmental phonemes:
The (Harakat) represent the Arabic short vowels. There are three main (Harakat) or short vowels in Arabic. The first short vowel, (Harakat) is al-Fatihah which represents the short / a / sound in English. We draw al-Fatihah as a short and tiny slanted line over the given letter like this: ( سَ ) which is pronounced as / sa /. The second short vowel, (Harakat) in Arabic is al-Kaserah which represents the short / e / vowel sound in English.
Al-Kaserah is drawn as a short and tiny slanted line under the given letter like this: ( سِ ) which we pronounced as / se / or / si / . The third short vowel sound in Arabic is al-Dammah which represents the short / u / vowel sound in English. We draw Al-Dammah as a tiny ( و ) letter in Arabic. We draw it over the given letter like this ( سُ ) which we pronounce as / so / or / su /.It is very important to note that an Arabic letter with a (Harakat) constitutes a short syllable. Also short syllables are the most recurrent in Arabic as well as the Holy Quran.
