What do you know about the Holy Quran?
The history of the Holy Quran:
The Holy Quran is the word of Allah revealed to prophet Mohammad via Jibril, the angel of revelation. It took about twenty years to be revealed.
The first Muslim to practice Hifz ul Quran was prophet Mohammad himself, of course. In the Holy Quran and in surah-A’la, Allah says to prophet Mohammad:
“We will teach you so that you will not forget, and practice Hifz ul Quran“.
The role of the prophet’s companions in Hifz ul Quran:
Having received the revealed ayats and surahs, prophet Mohammad, on his part, took the responsibility of teaching the Holy Quran to his companions. Knowing that the Hifz ul Quran was and is still one of the best deeds a Muslim can ever do, the enthusiastic companions competed with each other to excel in the Hifz ul Quran.
This way a lot of the prophet’s companions could perfect Hifz ul Quran. After the prophet’s death, the descendants of the companions went on Hifz ul Quran. Also, the new converts to Islam used to do Hifz ul Quran. Muslims decided later to compile the Holy Quran into one book. This was because many companions, who could do the Hifz ul Quran died in the Yamama Battle. It was a good step which helped Muslims to do the Hifz ul Quran.
The Holy Quran was no longer an oral text which made it easy to do Hifz ul Quran. Likewise many good Muslims worked as teachers to help junior Muslims to excel in Hifz ul Quran. Also, many pious parents sent their children to teachers so that the juniors could complete the Hifz ul Quran.
Wealthy Muslims helped set up institutions to help young Muslims learn the Hifz ul Quran. Also adults and grown up Muslims were keen on the Hifz ul Quran.
Throughout the Muslim countries, rulers and leaders encouraged Muslims of all ages to do the Hifz ul Quran.
The development of Hifz ul Quran:
Over time, the Hifz ul Quran has developed to become a hobby, a profession, a way of worship and a branch of knowledge. Sheiks did Hifz ul Quran to do their studies. Students tried to do Hifzul Quran to go on with their studies and learning.
However, Hifz ul Quran has helped other branches of knowledge and the sciences of the Arabic language to flourish.
