Islamic and the Holy Quran studies indicate that Umm Salama was prophet Mohammad’s wife number six. She was a wise and virtuous woman. umm Salama had a significant story. when her husband Abu Salama wanted to migrate from makkah to al-madina, some men of makkah tried to prevent him. When they failed, they took her as a hostage. Moreover, they tore apart her son Salama’s arm. Every day, umm Salama would go out of her house mourning and lamenting her husband and her son. An Arab saw her and pitied her. He went to quraish and asked them to let her go and join her husband in al-madina.
The family reunion at al-madina:
after joining her husband in al-madina, the family lived happily. however, abu salama died. on his deathbed, Abu Salama expressed his worry about the future of his wife and family. prophet mohammad made dua that allah would give his wife a better husband. it was prophet mohammad himself who married her . once she complained that she and her children were not a part of the prophet’s household and family. prophet mohammad assured her that they were included in the prophet’s family. this made her feel much happier.
Umm Salama was born into a good family:
umm salama’s father was a very generous man. Whenever he traveled, he would support his travel mates. He would provide them with food and drinks all the journey through. The Arabs used to consider this a good sign of generosity. Therefore, she inherited such virtuous characteristics from her father. umm Salama was wise and courageous. She was a good wife of the prophet’s.
Umm Salama was a good consultant:
In addition to narrating a lot of the prophet’s hadith, umm Salama had some famous situations in which she proved to have a good understanding of islam. umm Salama did not hesitate to argue with omar ibn al-khattab who wanted to interfere with some of prophet mohammad’s domestic affairs. It was true that Omar was the father of Hafsa, the prophet’s wife. Therefore, he thought he had the right to interfere with the affairs of the prophet’s wives. However, Umm Salama courageously stressed that it was the prophet’s wives’ affairs, not anybody else’s.
Umm Salama interfered at a crucial time:
Umm Salama witnessed a very important moment in the history of Islam. prophet Mohammad accompanied about two thousand companions and headed for Makkah to perform al-Umra. this put Quraish in a very critical situation. Nevertheless, Quraish sent a delegation to the prophet outside Makkah. They held talks and signed an accord at al-Hudaibiya.the accord stated that there would be a truce for ten years between the prophet and Quraish. Also, it stated that the Muslims returned to al-Madina without performing Umrah that year on condition that they performed al-Umra the following year.
